How to Clean Vinyl Records

A clean record can reduce unwanted surface noise and help protect both the groove and stylus. The safest approach is gentle handling, suitable tools and patience.

Start with dry cleaning

Hold the record by its edges and label area. Use a carbon-fiber or similarly appropriate record brush to lift loose dust before playback. Avoid pressing hard or using rough household cloths.

For deeper cleaning

  1. Place the record on a clean, stable surface.
  2. Use a purpose-made vinyl cleaning solution or an appropriate distilled-water-based method.
  3. Work gently in the direction of the grooves.
  4. Remove residue and allow the record to dry fully before sleeving.

What to avoid

Do not use abrasive paper towels, household glass cleaners or aggressive solvents. Avoid excessive pressure and keep liquids away from the center label whenever possible.

Before putting it away

A clean record belongs in a clean inner sleeve. Handle it by the edges, return it to an appropriate outer sleeve and store it upright.
